Count down to the 100th anniversary!

The Institute for Materials Research (KINKEN), Tohoku University, which was established by Professor Kotaro Honda, the first director, in 1916, will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2016. The institute has developed numerous innovative practical materials that are useful for human life such as the KS magnet that was invented at the institute by Professor Kotaro Honda, Sendust, silicon carbide fibers and amorphous alloys, which do not directly come to one's attention. KINKEN has a long and illustrious history, and it is continuing to conduct new research and development, manage the organization, and actively support talented researchers. Thus, the traditions of KINKEN have been established because of strong efforts. Professor Kotaro Honda's most famous message was "Now is important" This message defines the spirit of KINKEN. For the 100th anniversary and beyond, our mission at KINKEN is to continuously making the most of "Now'' conduct research and development, and support talented researchers who are worthy of the worldwide fame of "KINKEN". KINKEN will continue to focus on research and development of materials, and will attempt to lay the technological foundations for research on materials that are required to establish a safe, secure, and affluent society in the future. Thus KINKEN will continue to contribute to society by embodying the message of "Now is important" Finally, we ask for your continuous support and encouragement in the years to come.
